About

MP4 is the most common video format for sharing, so most people who need a smaller video are holding an MP4 file. This page opens the Video Compressor ready to take one. Drop the file in, choose how small it needs to be, and download a copy that keeps the same picture, with the sound kept by default.

There are two ways to set the result. By file size makes the video fit a target you choose, from 8 MB to 100 MB, or any number you type from 1 MB to 4000 MB. The page opens on 10 MB. By quality ignores the file size and sets the picture to High, Medium or Low, so the look matters more than an exact size. Pick size when a form or app has a limit, and quality when you want the picture to look the same.

A compressed MP4 is saved as an MP4 when your browser can encode that format, and as WebM when it cannot. The panel shows the original and new sizes after each run, and the Download button shows the size of the file you are about to save. The video is compressed in your browser and is not sent to a server.

How to use the Compress an MP4 File

  1. 1

    Choose an MP4 file

Drop the MP4 onto the page, or click to pick it. The file size, resolution, frame rate and length are shown once it loads.

  2. 2

    Pick size or quality

Under Settings, keep By file size and click a Target size, such as 10 MB or 25 MB, or type your own number. To set the look instead, choose By quality and pick High, Medium or Low.

  3. 3

    Check resolution and sound

Leave Resolution on Auto, or pick a smaller frame size. Switch Keep sound off if the file does not need audio.

  4. 4

    Compress and download

Click the button that shows your setting, such as Compress to 10 MB, or just Compress when By quality is selected. When it finishes, check the picture in the player, then click Download.

What people use it for

  • Share an MP4 in a chat

Shrink a short MP4 so it can be sent in a chat app. Set a size that is smaller than the app's limit, and check the app if the file is refused.

  • Upload an MP4 to a form

Many forms set their own maximum file size. Choose the target size that matches the form, then compress the MP4 to fit.

  • Keep the look of an MP4 steady

Use By quality when the picture matters more than an exact size, and pick High for the most detail.

  • Store a finished edit

Make a finished MP4 smaller before you move it to a shared drive or keep it for later.

Questions

Does the Video Compressor accept MP4 files?

Yes. MP4 is one of the formats the page accepts, along with MOV, WebM and MKV.

What format is the compressed file?

It is saved as MP4 when your browser can encode MP4. If it cannot, the file is saved as WebM instead.

Should I choose size or quality for an MP4?

Choose By file size when a service or form has a limit, because the tool aims for your target. Choose By quality when the look matters more than the exact size. In quality mode the file can end up larger or smaller than the original.

Why is my compressed MP4 bigger than the original?

The original may already be smaller than the setting produces. When that happens, the page warns you. Choose a smaller target size, or a lower quality, and compress again.

Is my MP4 uploaded?

No. The file is compressed in your browser and is not sent to a server.

Does it add a watermark to my MP4?

No. The tool does not add a watermark or logo to the video.
