About

WhatsApp does not send a video that is over its file size limit. The limit can differ between the app and its versions, and it can change, so check WhatsApp's help pages for the current figure. This page opens the Video Compressor already set to 16 MB, the WhatsApp option, so a clip from your phone or computer is ready to shrink with a few clicks.

Drop the video in and the tool reads its length, resolution and sound. It then works out a quality that fits 16 MB for that length, and does the work in your browser. The video is not sent to a server, so a family video or a private recording stays on your computer. If the clip is long, the page warns you when 16 MB is too small, and suggests turning sound off or choosing a larger size.

If the person you are sending to uses a different limit, or your version of the app allows more, pick another size. Type the number in the Or any size, in MB field under Settings, and the button shows your new target. Apps can also recompress media they send, so a video may look a little softer on the other side.

What people use it for

  • Share a trip or event with a family group

Shrink a short video from a holiday or a celebration so everyone in the group can open it on their phone.

  • Send a product demo to a client

Make a short screen recording or demo small enough to send in a chat, without waiting for a large upload.

  • Send a clip on a slow connection

A smaller file takes less time to send and to download, which helps when the signal is weak.

Questions

How do I compress a video to send on WhatsApp?

Open the compressor, keep 16 MB selected under Settings, and click Compress to 16 MB. Download the file, then attach it in WhatsApp. If the app still refuses it, choose a smaller size and compress the video again.

What is the WhatsApp video size limit?

WhatsApp sets a limit on the size of files you can send, and the figure can change. Check the current limit in WhatsApp's help pages. If it is different from 16 MB, type your number under Settings in the Or any size, in MB field.

Will WhatsApp make my video look worse?

Compressing to a small size lowers the detail, and fast movement shows the loss most. WhatsApp can also recompress media it sends, so a video may look a little softer when the other person receives it.

Can I send a long video on WhatsApp?

Only if the compressed file fits under the limit. A long video at 16 MB can look rough, so try turning sound off or shortening the clip first. For a much longer video, a link to a cloud storage service is often easier.

Is my video uploaded when I compress it?

No. The compression runs in your browser, and the video is not sent to a server. You send the finished file from WhatsApp yourself.

Does the WhatsApp compressor cost anything?

No. The tool is free to use, and it does not add a watermark or logo to the video.
