About
MOV is the QuickTime video format, and it is the format many iPhone and Mac videos are saved in. A phone clip or a Mac recording is often longer and larger than a GIF should be, so the usual step is to cut the one moment you want and turn only that into a loop.
The tool accepts MOV files directly, so there is no need to convert to MP4 first. Choose the part of the clip on the waveform, up to 30 seconds. Then set the width, from 240 to 800 pixels and up to the width of your clip, and the frame rate, from 8 to 25 frames per second.
The GIF is made on your device and the MOV is not uploaded. The GIF keeps the shape of your clip, so a tall phone video makes a tall GIF. No account is needed and no watermark is added. Captions are optional, up to 80 characters at the top and the bottom.
How to use the Convert a MOV File to a GIF
- 1
Open your MOV
Drop a MOV file on the page, or click to choose one saved from your iPhone or Mac. The first five seconds are selected by default.
- 2
Choose the part
Drag the two white handles on the waveform to set the start and end. Keep the span to 30 seconds or less, since a longer selection keeps Make GIF switched off.
- 3
Set width and frame rate
Under Size and smoothness, pick a width and frames per second. The width list stops at the width of your clip, so a small clip is not stretched.
- 4
Make and download
Press Make GIF, then press Download GIF. The size and frame count of the finished file appear next to the button.
What people use it for
A moment from a phone clip
Cut a few seconds of a phone recording, such as a pet, a sign or a goal, and send it as a looping GIF.
A Mac recording as a loop
Turn a short QuickTime recording of an app into a loop for a forum reply or a help thread.
A tall GIF from a vertical clip
A phone clip keeps its tall shape, so a vertical GIF suits a chat or a feed and the loop is not cropped.
A captioned family moment
Add classic top and bottom captions to a clip from your camera roll before you share it.
Questions
Can I convert a MOV file to a GIF for free?
Yes. Drop the MOV on the page, choose the part, and press Make GIF. The tool is free and needs no account.
Do I need to convert a MOV to MP4 first?
No. The page accepts MOV, MP4, WebM and MKV files directly.
Can I make a GIF from an iPhone video?
Yes, if the video is a MOV file. Drop it on the page and shorten it to 30 seconds or less, which is the longest a GIF can be here.
Why is my GIF from a MOV file so large?
A long span, a wide size or a high frame rate all make the file bigger. Shorten the span, choose a smaller width and lower the frames per second.
Is my MOV file uploaded?
No. The clip is read and turned into a GIF on your device and is not uploaded.
Does it add a watermark?
No. The page does not add a watermark to the GIF.
