About

Reels play full screen on a phone, and a 9:16 frame is the tall, narrow shape that fills that screen. A widescreen clip shown in a Reel leaves bars or gets cut off, so it needs reframing first. This page opens the free aspect ratio converter already set to 9:16, so a landscape recording can become a Reel without being shot again.

The fill mode decides what happens to the empty sides. For a talking head, Blur is usually the calmer choice: the speaker stays large in the centre and a softened copy of the same picture fills the sides. For a wide shot of a place or a product, Crop fills the frame edge to edge, and Zoom with the move sliders keeps the subject where you want it. Colour puts the picture over plain bars in a colour you pick, which suits a graphic, text-led look.

Reels put the caption, the account name and a column of buttons over the lower and right edges of the picture. Keep faces, on-screen text and the subject of the shot away from those edges. Check the frame with the safe zone checker, which shows approximate margins for Instagram, before you export. Instagram changes its layout over time, so check its current guidelines as well.

How to use the Resize a Video for Instagram Reels

  1. 1

    Choose your video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file on the page, or click to pick one. The Shape opens on 9:16 and stays there when the clip loads, even if the clip is already vertical.

  2. 2

    Choose a size

Under Size, choose 1080p or 720p. At 1080p the Reel is exported at 1080 by 1920 pixels, and at 720p at 720 by 1280 pixels.

  3. 3

    Fill the frame

Under Fill the frame with, choose Blur, Colour or Crop. Adjust the Blur slider or the Bar colour, or use Zoom and the move sliders when you choose Crop. The preview updates as the clip plays.

  4. 4

    Export and download

Press Export 9:16 video, wait for the progress bar to finish, then press Download. The file name ends in 9x16, such as clip-9x16, and the file is an MP4 in most browsers.

What people use it for

  • Repurpose a widescreen recording

Turn a landscape clip from a webinar, a holiday or a product demo into a vertical Reel.

  • Post a talking-head video

Keep the speaker large in the centre with Blur, so the vertical frame does not look empty.

  • Keep one subject in view

Use Crop with Zoom and the move sliders to fill the frame with a product or a person.

  • Check the frame before posting

Look at where the buttons sit in the safe zone checker, then reframe the clip so the important parts stay clear of them.

Questions

Is it free to resize a video for Instagram Reels?

Yes. The tool is free, runs in your browser and needs no account or sign-up. The page does not add a watermark to the exported video.

Does the video stay 9:16 when I load it?

Yes. The page keeps 9:16 when you load a clip, including one that is already vertical, until you choose another shape.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The video is opened and processed on your device and is not uploaded. You upload the downloaded file to Instagram yourself.

Should I choose Blur, Colour or Crop for a Reel?

Blur suits talking heads and any scene where the whole picture matters. Crop suits a wide shot with one clear subject. Colour gives a plain bar look.

Does the sound stay in the Reel?

Yes. The original audio track is carried over. If the browser cannot carry the sound across, the page tells you the file is silent.

What size is the exported Reel?

At 1080p a 9:16 export is 1080 by 1920 pixels. At 720p it is 720 by 1280 pixels. The file is an MP4 in most browsers.
