About
Make an SRT or VTT subtitle file for your video with this free online subtitle generator. Drop in a video or audio file, and the page marks where speech starts and stops, so you get a timed line for each part of the recording. Each line starts as placeholder text that you replace with your own words.
You type the words yourself. Every line has a start time, an end time and its text, and you can change any of them, delete a line, or add a new one with Add Cue at the current playback time. The line that matches the picture is shown over the video as it plays, so you can check the timing before you export.
Download the result as .SRT or .VTT with the buttons under Export Formats. The file is named after your video. The file is opened and read on your device, and it is not uploaded to a server.

Readable text for a recording
Give viewers the words for each part of an interview or talk, timed to the speech.
Questions
Is the subtitle generator free?
Yes. The tool is free to use and does not ask you to sign up.
Does it write the subtitles for me?
No. The tool marks where speech starts and stops and adds a line for each part, but the lines begin with placeholder text such as Subtitle cue 1. You type the words for each line.
What is the difference between SRT and VTT?
Both are plain text files with timed lines. SRT uses a number for each line and a comma before the milliseconds, while VTT starts with a WEBVTT header and uses a dot. Use the format that your video player or upload service asks for.
Can I change the timing of a subtitle?
Yes. Change the start and end numbers, in seconds, next to each line. The numbers move in steps of 0.1 second, and you can type any value.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The file is opened and read on your device, and the subtitle file is made in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I make subtitles from an audio file?
Yes. MP3 and WAV files can be loaded as well as video, and the speech in them is marked the same way.
